When to Call the HVAC Professionals

When dealing with home repairs it can be difficult to know when a DIY YouTube tutorial will suffice or when it’s time to call in the pros. Our most recent blog post went over how to change your own A/C filter (end of summer is a great time for clean up after a season of running your system). However, it’s important to remember that your heating and cooling system is a complicated, expensive, and often in need of some professional TCL from a certified HVAC technician.

How do you know when it’s the right time to give Columbia Heating and Cooling a call? Here are four things to look out for so you’ll know when it’s time to pick up the phone:

1. Your System Isn’t Running

A non-functional HVAC system is a basic indicator that it’s time to call a heating and cooling expert. Don’t forget to double check your thermostat to ensure it’s set correctly and programmed at the right temperature. Also check your circuit breakers or fuse box to make sure that electrical issues aren’t at play.

2. Your Energy Bills Are Abnormally High

If you’re experiencing sticker shock when you open your monthly utility bill, there could be a bigger problem with your HVAC system. A high utility bill could be an indicator of an inefficient system. Your unit may not be getting proper airflow due to a clog or dirty filter.  Or there may be a problem with a refrigerant leak, valves, coils or fittings. One of our technicians will be able to determine what’s causing the spike in energy costs help get your system running smoothly and efficiently.

3. Strange Noises or Notice Leaks

If you notice any loud noises (banging, clanging) check to make sure debris isn’t obstructing your outdoor unit. If this is the case you can typically turn the power off and remove the obstruction on your own. However, if the obstruction caused internal damage give us a call.

If you hear other noises (hissing, squeaking) or notice leaking fluids, give us a call right away. This may be an indicator of a worn out part or more serious damage which could lead to bigger problems down the road.

4. It’s Time for Annual Maintenance

Just like your car, your HVAC system needs regular maintenance by professionals – at least once per year.  Regular tune-ups will help prolong the lifespan of your unit and save you money utility bills and repair/replacement costs down the road. HVAC tune-ups involve much more than a simple inspection. For instance, our furnace tune-up involves a 19 point checklist including a thorough cleaning and testing of all functions.

Schedule your HVAC tune-ups now and save! We’re currently offering tune-up special for your furnace, fireplace or air conditioner. Combine any two tune-ups and save an additional $10 off the total cost. This special lasts through December 31st, so give Columbia Heating and Cooling a call today before the cold weather hits.
