HVAC New Year Resolutions for 2018

The time has come once again to think back on the past year and prepare goals for the new year ahead. January is the perfect time to adopt a new approach to the way you maintain and care for your HVAC system. Here’s our list of top New Year’s “resolutions” to use as a guide to maintaining your HVAC system for a more comfortable and energy-efficient home in 2018.

Resolution #1: Utilize Your Programmable Thermostat

If you aren’t using your programmable thermostat to its full potential, the new year is a great time to start. Thermostats automatically regulate the temperature in in your home – whether you’re there or not – giving you full control. Programming your thermostat to a lower temperature while you’re away or asleep is a great way to conserve energy and save money on utility bills.

Missing a programmable thermostat in your home? Consider having one installed by a certified technician. Columbia Heating & Cooling offers a FREE programmable thermostat with any “all new” installation – including a furnace/AC or a furnace/heat pump.

Resolution #2: Change Your Filters

Changing your HVAC filters is one of the easiest ways to ensure that your system will run efficiently. We recommend changing your filters at a minimum of once every 3 months to help prevent potentially costly repairs and breakdowns. Change your filters more frequently during months with more extreme high and low temperatures. Set a schedule and mark on your calendar to help you remember to change out the filters.

Resolution #3: Improve Indoor Air Quality & Air Flow

Taking simples steps to improve indoor air quality can have a great impact on the way your HVAC system functions and on the overall comfort levels of your home. Improve air quality and air flow by:

– Making sure all vents and air returns are not blocked or closed.
– Adding house plants around your home to help naturally purify the air.
– Adopting a regular cleaning schedule.
– Investing in an air purifier or all-home humidifier.
– Taking steps to seal air leaks and insulate your home.

Resolution #4: Upgrade Your HVAC System

If your HVAC system is nearing the end of its lifespan (10-20 years, depending on the model), the new year is the perfect time to start thinking about investing in a new, more energy efficient replacement.
