3 Scary Easy Ways to Void your HVAC Warranty
You’ve just purchased a brand-new HVAC system and the odds are you’re ready to put it to good use. You may be eager to test drive your new appliance – but one false move could easily result in a voided warranty.
Oooo, spooky. And just in time for Halloween!
To keep your warranty valid and your wallet happy, avoid these three common mistakes:
1. Failing to schedule routine maintenance
The benefits of scheduling regular tune-ups for your HVAC are plentiful. Routine maintenance can keep your system functioning at peak efficiency, help to catch problems before they become bigger (and more expensive), and ensure a valid warranty. You can also sign up for our maintenance plans also called energy savings agreements (ESAs) and receive a discount when you purchase a 1, 2 or 3 year maintenance package for your furnace and A/C. Most manufacturers require annual maintenance to prevent covering unnecessary replacement and repairs under your warranty.
Tip: Hold on to your documentation. Keep a record of all HVAC maintenance as an extra precaution.
2. Making repairs with off-brand parts
HVAC companies always recommend using equipment from the original manufacturer, since they are made to fix the exact function of whatever piece failed. By doing otherwise, you run the risk of losing your warranty. When a professional comes in to service your HVAC, keep your eyes peeled and ears open for terms such as “off-brand,” “aftermarket,” and “non–OEM” (non-original equipment manufacturer). Take the time to specify your preference for original parts. You just might save yourself some real heartache (and cash!) down the line.
3. Neglecting to register your warranty.
Picture this: you’ve scheduled regular check-ups for your HVAC, never purchased an off-brand or aftermarket part for repairs, and have been exceptionally vigilant in documenting all things HVAC since its installation. Despite your care and attention, your HVAC is malfunctioning and it’s time to call on your warranty. Only one very large problem stands in your way: your warranty was never registered. For many new homeowners, this is a missed step that results in a voided contract and hefty replacement costs. Registering your warranty can be as easy as opening a web browser. Be sure to do so before firing up your shiny new HVAC!
